2006 Provided excellent winter conditions with enough cold to provide the vines with a good rest period. Although there was less snow-fall than in previous years, above average rainfall was however recorded. A cooler, wet spring led to uneven budding and irregular berry ripening meant a green harvest was required halfway through véraison. Apart from a sudden heat wave during January 2007 that’s saw temperatures peak above 40⁰c, harvest conditions normalised with some welcome rainfall February and March. The Bordeaux varieties benefited from the cooler weather which slowed the ripening process. Fabulous fruit characters with rich tannins can be expected from the reds and blending proved to be an exciting challenge.

The Ernie Els Proprietor’s Blend 2008 has a dark black core with glass-staining depth. It is bold and powerful, offering inviting notes of chocolate, herbs and drops of freshly brewed coffee. Cabernet Sauvignon offers the sturdy backbone with the Shiraz adding a savoury edge to the pure, sweetly fruited mid-palate. Spicy new oak checks the ripe, folding tannins, all balanced by excellent lift on the finish. Finely tuned and delicious now, it will cellar well for another 5 to 10 years. More information in PDF.

The opaque, garnet-black core offers the first intentions of this gutsy Syrah. Its sweet nose shows pronounced boysenberries, kirsch, black olive and hints of star anise. Concentrated black fruits balance phenomenal intensity and power, all checked by chiselled, layered tannins. This impressive modern style dances the tightrope of ripeness and elegance. Rather closed in its rambunctious youth, time in the cellar will add further breadth and tame the grippy tannins. More information in PDF.

This black-centered, beguiling and multi-dimensional Cabernet Sauvignon displays red rather than black fruits. Pencil shavings on the nose lead to a fresh entry and full-bodied succulent palate. A salty, savoury complexity with notes of graphite and tobacco overlay its modern, finely-tuned frame. The tannins are immense but polished, balanced by the vivid fruit of the wonderful 2009 vintage. Precise and varietally flawless, expect this brilliant Cabernet to have a serious future ahead whilst the tannins find their feet. More information in PDF.

The beauty of this exceptional 2009 vintage immediately shows in the bright purple colour and shimmering edge. Notes of cherries, plums and raspberries line a lively nose, following through to a full but spritely and elegant palate. There is an enduring combination of subtly and power with the rich ripeness balancing silky tannins and a lushes texture. This suave merlot is difficult to put down, even at this embryonic stage! Expect the finely-etched tannins to ease with time and become even softer and more stylish. More information in PDF.

Brightly tinted with a purple edge, the Ernie Els Big Easy glistens in the glass from the superlative 2009 vintage. There is a vivid display of complexity with layered cinnamon, fynbos, liquorice and sappy red berry fruit. The strong Shiraz and Grenache component adds spiciness in amongst the mélange of varieties which include a splash of perfumed Viognier. There is excellent balance between the crystalline acidity and a creamy textured finish. Exotic and energetic now, it will improve with half a decade in the cellar. More information in PDF.
