Stellenbosch’s Ernie Els Wines featured strongly at Canada’s foremost wine show, Sélections Mondiales des Vins 2007, with two of their celebrated red wines gaining top accolades.
Considered to be one of South Africa’s leading wineries, Ernie Els Wines received awards for their Engelbrecht Els Proprietor’s Blend 2004 and for their flagship red blend, Ernie Els 2003.
The Engelbrecht Els Proprietor’s Blend 2004 received a Grand Gold Award. It was one of only 10 wines from around the globe – and one of only two South African wines – to achieve this honour. The Engelbrecht Els wine was created to celebrate the palates of Ernie Els (Bordeaux style) and Jean Engelbrecht (Shiraz-based style) and to crown their joint wine-making venture. The wine represents a first for South African wine-making and is a unique combination of six varietals that is both beautifully balanced and accessible to all palates.
The other wine to receive an accolade at the Sélections Mondiales was the Ernie Els 2003 which was recognised as an outstanding Bordeaux blend. It received a gold medal to add to its already impressive list of awards.
Commenting on the latest awards, proprietors Jean Engelbrecht and Ernie Els said they were delighted with the results. “The success of our Proprietor’s Blend has proven that we are not afraid to challenge convention and experiment with unusual blends. We give all the credit to winemaker, Louis Strydom,” said the partners.
The Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada wine tasting competition was created in Canada in 1983 and has grown into the largest international wine competition in North America. The competition attracts close to 2600 wines from more than 30 countries and is considered one of most prestigious wine competitions in the world. |
